One of my favourite words is “vibrant.” You’ll see it a lot on my website. Another favourite word is “joyful,” which is also my favourite way to be described. Where do my endless joy and vibrancy come from? Green juice. And also deep, deep gratitude and compassion. Let me tell you a story…

I had a pretty great childhood. My real story started when I was 12, when I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, an autoimmune disease that affects the large intestine. Basically, my body started attacking itself, leading to chronic inflammation and ulcerations on the inside of my colon. I had one of the worst cases my doctors had ever seen and my diagnosis marked the beginning a 10-year struggle with pain, drugs, side-effects, lack of energy, weeks of missed school… you name it, I experienced it.  I felt helpless to be told there was no cure for my disease. I looked at my future and it all looked the same: endless pill bottles, relapses, and hopelessness.

My junior year at university the disease got so bad I completely stopped responding to treatment.  I had my “last straw” moment while discussing the possibility of experimental drugs with my gastroenterologist.  I looked her in the eye and said, “I can’t do this anymore.” I met with a surgeon the next week and prepared for a total colectomy, three surgeries where I would have my entire large intestine removed and part of my small intestine repurposed to replace it. You can Google it if you want more info, it’s actually pretty neat.

That first operation went smashingly, according to my surgery team, and I didn’t even spend three full days in hospital afterward.  The recovery process was long and boring – I was already feeling better than ever and was impatient for my body to heal and catch up to my mind which was full of possibility for the first time in 10 years.  I felt like I’d woken up from a decade-long nightmare into a beautiful world where I could literally do anything I wanted.

Four years later, every morning still feels like Christmas.  I wake up without pain, without fear, full of hope and excitement for the day.  I feel blessed and humbled and inspired to share my story with everyone and to help them start their own healing journey.

Because let’s be honest, everyone’s got something. You might not have ulcerative colitis, or even a physical disease, but there’s something in your life holding you back, holding you down, than you need to heal from.  Leo Tolstoy wrote that everyone is unhappy in their own way, but I believe that our individual suffering, being something universally experienced, is what allows us to experience compassion.  And compassion and gratitude are the two most powerful emotions we are capable of experiencing.
So where does that bring me?

Today I am disease-free, drug-free, and pain-free. The operations I had allowed me enough space and freedom in my own life to shift my perspective in a really profound way. I started looking at my life, and my health, holistically. I discovered that by treating my body as a whole system instead of disparate parts I could do something as simple as changing my diet and completely eliminate the symptoms of (and prescriptions for) the asthma, eczema, and allergies I’d been struggling with my whole life.

I’m continually inspired by other women and men who have taken back their agency and refused to believe there’s any diagnosis that won’t benefit from a healthy diet and a healthy dose of gratitude and mindfulness. I’ve joined the ranks of people passionate about sharing their healing journeys and inspiring others to heal as well. From my heart to yours, I promise you that you are never without hope. There is always something you can do. I’d love to help you find your path and help you along the way. Call or email me today and get started building your most vibrant life ever!
